Wingecarribee Shire Council is excited to announce that it has secured a $150,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Local Government Waste Solutions Fund. The funding will be used to develop a series of community workshops focused on transforming common landfill waste materials into valuable products.

The Local Government Waste Solutions Fund encourages the transition to a circular economy by supporting local innovative waste and recycling solutions that align with the NSW Government’s Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041.

Located at the Resource Recovery Centre in Moss Vale, the workshops will teach participants practical skills in textile weaving, leadlight creation, recycled plastic moulding, tyre repurposing, and propagation.

By diverting materials from landfill and giving them new life, these workshops contribute to a more sustainable future.

Wingecarribee Shire Council Manager of Waste and Resource Management, Clinton McAlister, said that the new initiative encouraged residents to engage with waste materials in new and creative ways.

“In the most recent audit of domestic kerbside waste materials it was discovered that
over 50% of bins were comprised of recoverable resources that could be captured for recycling and re-use,” he said.

“Learning to utilise materials that cannot disintegrate naturally and that often end up in landfill, such as plastics and construction materials, is an exciting opportunity to reduce waste and carbon emissions,” Clinton said.
