Nowra’s ‘Chopper on a Stick’ return flight

A re-elected Albanese Government will return the iconic ‘chopper on a stick’ back to the Nowra community with a long-lasting plan to keep it there.

The Iroquois 894 helicopter was taken down due to serious safety concerns after more than 25 years as a feature of the local community, reflecting its close ties to nearby HMAS Albatross. Unfortunately, its condition meant it was unable to be returned.

Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said, “The Albanese Government knows how important the ‘chopper on a stick’ is to the local community and will replace it with a life-size model chosen by the community, for the community.

“The replacement model will be an enduring feature in Nowra for decades to come.”

Nowra residents will have the opportunity to select the new aircraft, choosing between replicas that will include:

  • A Seahawk helicopter – the current helicopter predominantly flying from HMAS Albatross
  • An Iroquois 894 – re-instating what was most recently there

Ms Phillips said, “Importantly, this will be a community project, from consultation through to going back up on the stick and we will work with the local community and local businesses to deliver a new Nowra icon.” “
