The new waste facility in West Nowra, will not be going ahead.
It’s now been confirmed the company tasked with building the facility, Bioelektra, has gone into liquidation.
Shoalhaven City Council Deputy Mayor Paul Ell said questions now need to be asked about whether council carried out its due diligence on the project.
“How is it, that council got into bed with a company, which clearly didn’t have the ability to deliver this contract,
“Our city has been left exposed and in a perilous situation in terms of our waste strategy,”Councillor Ell said.
Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has contacted the Minister for Local Government about the fiasco and is calling for an Independent inquiry.
“Ratepayers have a right to know why they are worse off financially and environmentally and they have a right to know why adequate due diligence wasn’t done, on what is likely the largest contract council will enter,” he said.
