A single cup of coffee could cost anywhere from $8 to $12 by the end of the year.

According to Australian Restaurant and Cafe Association chief executive Wes Lambert, “up to 30 percent of businesses will feel heavy pressure by these increases, and we’ve heard about bean prices going up as much as 50 per cent”.

If you can’t go without your caffeine fix and want to be a bit more budget friendly, the desperate last call of local service stations may have to be your solution. At 7/11 you can pick up a coffee for $3, while Coles and Ampol service stations have options for $3.50.

That said, when you grab a coffee from a cafe, you’re paying for more than just the drink, it’s the experience, the atmosphere, and supporting local businesses.

Independent brewers are feeling the pressure, warning that this tax hike could be a tipping point for them.

“Many that are just on that edge of survival, will not be able to make it,” Independent Brewers Association Chief Executive Kylie Lethbridge told 9News.

“If we continue to put off staff and we continue to close, then that tax revenue is lost anyway.”

The tax is expected to increase by 2-3 per cent, which could see the price of a pint at the pub rise to around $15.

This alcohol tax generates millions of dollars for the government each year.
