A Britney Spears biopic is coming, directed by John M. Chu, the man behind Wicked. Chu says he wants to “do her justice” and tell her story properly.
Film Rights Secured
Universal Pictures has bought the rights to make the movie, which will be based on Spears’ bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me. The book, released in October 2023, reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list and details her career and personal struggles, including the 13-year conservatorship that made headlines.
Produced by Marc Platt
The biopic will be produced by Marc Platt, known for hits like La La Land and Legally Blonde. Spears teased the project on X (formerly Twitter) in August, revealing her collaboration with Platt.
Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned 🌹🎥

Chu’s Vision for the Film
John M. Chu shared his excitement about the film during the Golden Globes, saying he wants to make sure Britney’s story is told with care. Though the script is still in the works, he’s eager to explore themes of fame, youth, and how society treats women in the spotlight.
